Bank robber...................................

Mall scoured for bank robber
Witnesses saw suspect flee into Cambridge Place

GREG MERCER
CAMBRIDGE (Jul 4, 2007)

A busy Cambridge shopping mall became the subject of an intense police search late yesterday afternoon after a bank robber who claimed he had a gun took off running in the direction of a crowd of shoppers.

By 6 p.m. officers were scouring the washrooms, food court, crowded halls and retail stores of Cambridge Place in an unsuccessful attempt to find a man who had minutes before walked into the TD Canada Trust Branch at 425 Hespeler Rd. and handed a note to a bank teller demanding money.

The robber said he had a gun, and pointed toward his waistband.
Witnesses reported seeing the man run out of the bank carrying a bag, and head across the street toward the mall, police said.

After the robbery -- the second Canada Trust heist in Cambridge in a week -- officers were posted outside all major exits from the mall, and questioned shoppers, even children on bicycles, as to what they had seen. Mall guards and store security staff were also given a description of the robber and put on alert.

"There were police everywhere, running through the mall, all out of breath," said shopper Becky Woods, waiting outside a Zellers department store, where officers had just finished searching.
Because of heavy pedestrian crowds in the area, police dogs were called off the search, said Waterloo regional police Sgt. Tom Schroeder. The potential for a confrontation with the bank robber in the middle of a crowded shopping area "was very concerning," he added.
"There was just too many people around," Schroeder said.

The man -- treated as though he was armed, although a gun was not seen by bank staff -- remained on the loose last night. No one was hurt in the robbery, Schroeder said.
No getaway vehicle was spotted in the heist.

A security manager at Cambridge Place said police reviewed the mall's video surveillance tapes but couldn't find a man who matched the description of the robber.

Mall security guards, who are unarmed, were told by their own supervisors to let police handle the search for the suspect, for safety reasons.

The man was wearing dark sunglasses, a black windbreaker with white stripes on the arms and a black military-style cap when he committed the robbery.

He was described as a black man in his 40s or 50s, with short hair, stocky build, no facial hair, and about six feet tall.

A week ago this morning, a man in his 50s walked into a Canada Trust branch in the South Cambridge Plaza and passed a note to the teller indicating he had a bomb. No bomb was seen, but the man got away on foot with a bag of money.

That man was described as white, wearing a green, full-brimmed fishing hat. He is believed to have dirty blond hair tied into a ponytail, and disguised his face with dark aviator sunglasses. The suspect also had swelling and a bandage on his left cheek.
